Elizabeth Challis

c1813-1861

 

Elizabeth Milsom was born in Wiltshire she was baptised on the 19th September 1813 at St Peter and St Paul Marlborough Wiltshire and was the daughter of Thomas and Martha Milsom (nee Peck) who were married on the 8th January 1807 at St Peter and St Paul Marlborough. Thomas was born c1776 and Martha was born c1788.

Elizabeth married William Challis (a Gardener) on the 18th December 1837 at St Nicolas Church Newbury and they had the following children:

Thomas (aged 5 in 1841 so possibly born Thomas MIlsom before Elizabeth married)

Mary Ann 1841

Sophia Jane c1844

Jane Caroline 1848-1848

William 1850

Harriet 1855

In 1841 the family were living in Northbrook Street Newbury and William was working as a Gardener. By 1851 William was working as a Kiln Plate Worker and the family were living in (illegible) Yard in the parish of St Nicolas Newbury. In 1861 they were living in (looks like) Darr’s Yard and William was working as a Bricklayer (Master).

Elizabeth died aged 48 in 1861 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20th December

The 1871 census records William (55) as, formerly a Bricklayer, living in Alton Place Newbury, his daughter Harriet (16), widowed daughter Sophia Brown (27) and his grandchildren Thomas Brown (6) and Elizabeth Brown (4) were living with him at this time.

William died aged 62 in 1879 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the28th February.
