ELIZABETH JORDAN

*Aged Almswoman's Death

Newbury has lost one of its oldest inhabitants in the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Jordan, of 6, St. Mary's Almshouses, who passed away on December 29th at the advanced age of 92. Born at Burghclere and the daughter of William Perkins, who was then the licensee of the “Carnarvon Arms,” Whitway, she was apprenticed to dress-making in an establishment in Northbrook-street, continuing her occupation later at Bristol.

She then married living at Pewsey, afterwards returning to Newbury. Her husband was Frederick Jordon, who together with his father, was in the employ of the late Earl of Carnarvon. He predeceased her about thirty years ago.

She has been in St. Mary's Almshouse for twenty-two years, and though for the last twelve months has been practically confined to her bed, has enjoyed fairly good health, and with the exception of her eyesight, retained all her faculties in spite of her great age.

She spent a quiet Christmas, and was able to eat a good dinner on the 25th, but later contracted a cold and died the following Thursday from bronchitis.

She had five children of which three sons and one daughter are living.

The funeral took place at the Old Cemetery on Wednesday in last week, the Rector of Newbury (Rev. L.R. Majendie) officiating.
