Richard Morris
Richard Morris
c1781-1861
Richard was born in Wiltshire he was baptised on the16th September 1781 in Burbage Wiltshire the son of Thomas and Rachael Morris (nee Platt) who were married in Burbage on the 11th May 1780. Thomas was from the parish of Basing and was a bachelor and Rachel was a spinster of the parish of Burbage.
Thomas and Rachael also had the following children (all baptised in Burbage):
Thomas baptised 17/12/1782
Laban baptised 6/7/1786
William baptised 3/4/1788
Rachel Platt baptised 20/4/1790
Joseph baptised 28/5/1792
Richard’s mother died not long after giving birth to his brother Joseph, she was buried on the 9th July 1792 in Burbage.
His father remarried in Burbage the following year, his 2nd wife was Sarah Stone (a spinster) they married on the 28th March 1793. Sarah died in 1806 she was buried on the 14th June in Burbage. Thomas married again on the 29th July 1806 at St Peter Marlborough Wiltshire his 3rd wife was Elizabeth Titcomb (a spinster).
Richard was a Shoemaker/Cordwainer he married Elizabeth Smith in Chieveley Berkshire in 1805.
The 1815 census of Newbury records Richard Morris (34), living in White Hall (west side of Bartholomew Street) Newbury with his wife Elizabeth (32), son Richard (9), daughters Elizabeth (7), Myra Ann (2) and his mother-in-law Ann Smith (54).
The 1841 census records Richard (60), living in Cheap Street Newbury with a Jane Morris (60). (Possible marriage, Richard Morris + Jane Hedges 1822 Welford and Wickham Berkshire)
The 1851 census records Richard (69) as an Almsman/Shoemaker and Jane (70) (born Hoe Benham Berkshire), living at 8 Kimber’s Almshouses Newbury.
Jane died aged 76 in 1857 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st October.
Richard died aged 79 in 1861 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd Marc
