Frederick Nias Tomes
1859-1860
Frederick’s name was registered as Frederick Nias Tomes at the time of his birth and death. He was baptised as Frederic Nias Toms on the 11th September 1859 at St Nicolas Church Newbury Berkshire the son of James Nias and Mary Toms (nee Pavey) who were married in Kingsclere Hampshire in 1856 (surname recorded as Toms at time of marriage).
Frederick died aged 8 months in 1860, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5th May
Frederick’s family: His mother Mary was born c1825 in Highclere Hampshire the daughter of John and Mary Pavey (nee Lovegrove) who were married on the 24th June 1824 in Highclere.
His father James was a Tailor, he was born and privately baptised on the 11th October 1811 at St Nicolas Church Newbury as James the son of William Tomes (also a Tailor) and Amy Nias.
(James was a widower when he married Mary. His 1st wife was Ann Purdue they were married 1850 in Newbury (surname recorded as Toms). They had 2 children, Clara Ann Tomes born in 1850 and Charles William Nias Tomes born in 1854, died aged 1 month, buried in the NRC on the 26th August 1854. Ann died aged 33 in 1854 she was buried in the NRC on the 5th August 1854 (both deaths record the surname as Tomes. NRC burial records record the surname as Toomes). In 1851 James Nias Toms (38), Ann (29), Clara Ann (10 months), a niece Alice Toms (6) (illegitimate daughter of his sister Emma) and Sarah Clack (13), a Servant were recorded living in West Mills Newbury).
Frederick’s siblings were: Sarah Elizabeth Tomes born c1857 (recorded as Susan in the 1871 census), Helen Nias Tomes born 1861, John Pavey Nias Tomes born 1863 and George Edwin Nias Toms born 1868
In 1861 James Nias (48) (surname recorded as Rias on ancestry), Mary (38), Clara (10) and Infant female (1 week, (Helen)) were recorded living at the Eight Bells Inn, Bartholomew Street, Newbury
The 1871 census records James Nias Tomes (59), Mary (46), Susan (14), Helen (9), John Pavey (7) and George Edwin (2) still living at the Eight Bells Inn.
In 1881 James and Mary were recorded living separately. James Nias Tomes (69) was recorded living alone at 7 New Church Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury. Mary (55), Helen (20) and George (12) were recorded living in West Fields Newbury with Mary’s mother Mary Pavey (80) who was blind (ancestry have their surname recorded as Jones).
Mary Nias Tomes died aged 61 in 1887 (death registered in Camberwell)
The 1891 census records James N Tomes (80) still living alone in Church Almshouses, Newbury. James Nias Tomes died aged 87 in 1899 in Newbury
