Eliza Stillman
Eliza Stillman (1797 – 1860)
Eliza Newbery was born circa 1797 in Newbury.
Eliza married George Stillman on 13 June 1819 at St Nicolas in Newbury. George was born circa 1795 in Newbury.
In the 1841 census George and Eliza were living with in Bartholomew Street in Newbury with nine children, Henry (20), George (15), Frederick (14), Charles (12), Elija (8), Adolphus (6), Mary (4), Arthur (2) and Augustus (under a year). George was recorded as a parish clerk.
Ten years later in the 1851 census George and Eliza were still living in Bartholomew Street with five children and two grandchildren. George recorded as apparitor and parish clerk.
The Berkshire Chronicle edition of 24 March 1860 reported the death of Eliza. It read “March 18, after a long illness borne with Christian fortitude, Eliza, the beloved wife of Mr. George Stillman, parish clerk of Newbury, aged 63 years.” Eliza was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 21 March 1860.
George died 27 February 1864 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 2 March 1864. He was the first of four members of the Stillman family who held the position of parish clerk in Newbury for over a century. He was succeeded as parish clerk by his son John Redford Stillman.
Two sons of George and Eliza were buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, John Redford Stillman on 26 January 1881 and Arthur Septimus Stillman on 23 January 1882.
