ORCHARD – Dec. 28th, at 1 Holly Bank Terrace, King’s-road, William, the beloved husband of Clara Orchard aged 56, after a long suffering. – “His end was peace.”

William, his parents, siblings and early life:

William was born in Micheldever, Hampshire, the son of John and Eliza Orchard (nee Oram) who were married on the 14th December 1844 in Overton Hampshire.

His father John was born in Freefolk, Hampshire, he was baptised on the 25th April 1824 in Laverstoke, Hampshire, the son of David (a Labourer) and Sarah Orchard (nee Taylor) who were married on the 6th April 1822 in Whitchurch, Hampshire.

His mother Eliza was baptised on the 2nd May 1824 in Overton Hampshire, the daughter of Abraham (a Labourer) and Harriet Oram (nee Wigley) who were married on the 1st July 1818 in Overton.

Both of William’s parents died aged 67 in 1891, they were buried together on the 23rd June at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw-cum-Donnington.

William’s siblings were:

Charles baptised in 1845 in Southampton (died aged 5 in 1851)

In 1871 William (5) was living at 6, Warren Cottages, Micheldever, with his father John (48), and Agricultural Labourer, his mother Eliza (47), his siblings, Henry (14), Edwin (7) and Thomas (4), his grandmother Harriet Oram (81), James Fendick (3) and Caroline Fendick (1).

The 1881 census records William (15) as an Agricultural Labourer, living in the hamlet of Micheldever Station, Micheldever, with his father John (57), a Farm Lambouer, his mother Eliza (57) and his brother Thomas (13), an Agricultural Labourer.

William in later life:

William married Clara Mackrell (marriage registered in the March quarter 1891, in Newbury)

(Clara was baptised on the 25th April 1869 in Combe, Hampshire, the daughter of George and Sarah Mackrell (nee Woods) who were married in 1847 (marriage registered in Hungerford)

William and Clara had the following children (all born in Newbury):

Twins: Kate Elizabeth and Cyril James 1898

The 1891 census records William (25) as a Carman, living at 4 Brixton Rise, (off Cheap Street) Newbury, with Clara (24) and their son Rupert (1)

In 1901 William (36), a Railway Carman, Clara (34), Arthur (9), Clara (7), William (4) and the twins, Kate and Cyril (2), were living at 7, Chestnut Court, Newbury.

The 1911 census records William (45) as a Carter for Pickfords Ltd (General Carrier), living at 1, Holly Bank Terrace, Kings Road, Newbury, with Clara (44) and their children Arthur (19), a Butcher’s Assistant, Clara (17), William (15), a Boot Repairer, Kate (12) and James (12).

William died aged 56, on the 28th December 1921, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st December.

By 1948 Clara was living at 9 Upper Raymond’s Almshouses Newbury.

She died aged 82, on the 21st June 1951 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery, with her husband William, on the 25th June.
