Henry Elliott was born circa 1829 in Newbury, the son of James and Maria Elliott. In the 1841 census Henry was living with his parents and five brothers in The City in Newbury with James recorded as a bricklayer. Ten years later in the 1851 census Henry was still living with his parents and four brothers in Newbury, both James and Henry were recorded as bricklayers.

Henry married Sarah Ellen Brown in 1855 in Newbury. Sarah was baptized on 17 January 1830 at All Saints in Burghclere as Sarah Ellen Hopson daughter of Eliza Hopson. Eliza then married James Brown on 28 February 1830 at Burghclere and Sarah subsequently used the name Brown. In the 1841 census Sarah was recorded with her parents in The City in Newbury with James recorded as a bricklayer.

A son Henry James was born in June 1859. He died 7 December 1859 & was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 12 December. An inquest report appeared in the Reading Mercury dated 10 December as below.

An inquest was held at the Public Office on Wednesday last, before Joseph Bunny, Esq. the borough coroner, on view of the body of a child six months’ old son of Mr. Elliott, of the Bartholomew Brewery Tap. Maria Dennis said that on the previous morning, about eleven o’clock, she was at the deceased’s grandmother’s house in the “city” when the child become convulsed, and it made a noise in its throat and died in about five minutes, in her (witness’s) presence. The deceased’s mother had told witness that it had been poorly before. Eliza Brown, the child’s grandmother, stated that her husband brought the child that morning, about ten o’clock, from its mother; that it remained with her until its death: it expired in her arms. Verdict: “Died in convulsions from natural causes.”

In the 1861 census Henry and Sarah were living in The Little Brewery in Newbury with Henry recorded as a bricklayer. Ten years later in the 1871 census Henry and Sarah were living with children William aged 9, Edwin James aged 6 and Henry aged 3 in Bartholomew Street with Henry recorded as a bricklayer.

Sadly, on 3 December 1874 Henry, son of Henry and Sarah, aged six died at St Bartholomew’s in Newbury. He was buried 9 December at Newtown Road Cemetery. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 17 December 1874 which read:-

ELLIOTT Dec 3, at St Bartholomew’s, Newbury, youngest son of Henry and Sarah Ellen Elliott.

Henry and Sarah were living in Argyle Road in Newbury in the 1881 census with son William aged 19. Henry was recorded as a builder employing five men and two boys. They were still in Argyle Road in 1891 but by themselves with Henry recorded as a builder.

Sarah died 28 March 1896 at Argyle Rd & was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 April. Administration of her estate was granted to Henry on 7 May 1908 at Oxford. The value of the estate was £85 16s 3d.

Henry was still living in Argyle Road in the 1901 census along with his son Edwin and niece Lottie Elliott (who was born in Headcorn in Kent), with Henry still a builder.

Henry died 26 November 1909 while still living in Argyle Road and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 30 November 1909. He left a will and probate was granted to his son Edwin John Elliott a builder on 18 February 1911 at Oxford. The value of the estate was £5,011 10s 6d.

Henry’s mother Maria Elliott was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 10 March 1862. Sarah’s parents were also buried at Newtown Road, her father James Brown on 29 December 1875 and her mother Eliza Brown on 25 January 1883.
