Jane Smith

Jane Smith

1796-1859

Jane was born on the 20^th June 1796 in Newbury Berkshire she was baptised on the 14^th September 1796 the daughter of Timothy and Mary Skinner (nee Purdue) who were married on the 19^th May 1778 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (both were single).

Her father Timothy was born c1755 in Newbury he died aged 82 in 1837 and was buried on the 31^st March at St Nicolas Newbury

Her mother Mary was born c1757 in Newbury. (In 1841 Mary (84) was recorded living in Speen Place Berkshire with her married daughter Sarah Eyles and their family) She died aged 86 in 1843 and was buried on the 19^th May at St Mary the Virgin Shaw-cum-Donnington.

The 1815 census of Newbury records Timothy (60) as a Weaver living on the west side of Newtown Lane Newbury with Mary (58), their son Charles (15) and their granddaughter Mary Ann (1).

Jane married Samuel Hooper on the 27^th February 1818 at Old Church St Pancras London. Samuel was born c1791. They had at least one child, Samuel born c1822. Jane’s husband Samuel died aged 32 in 1823 he was buried on the 2^nd March at St Mary Lambeth (abode recorded as James Street). After his death Jane and her son returned to Newbury. Samuel died aged 1+ in 1823 he was buried on the 4^th June at St Nicolas Newbury.

Jane remarried on the 9^th August 1824 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Her 2^nd husband was a widower, Joseph Smith, born c1792 in Wantage. (Jane was Joseph’s 3^rd wife. 1^st wife Martha Maskell, married 27^th December 1818 at St Nicolas Newbury. Martha died aged 26, buried 30^th November 1819, one child Martha baptised 27^th November 1819. 2^nd wife Charlotte Hine, married 20^th December 1820 at St Nicolas Newbury, Charlotte died aged 35, buried 22^nd January 1823)

Joseph and Jane had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:

Joseph baptised 17^th December 1826 (died aged 7+ buried 7^th May 1834 at St Nicolas Newbury)

William baptised 8^th February 1829

John baptised 17^th October 1830 (died aged 2 buried 11^th January 1833 at St Nicolas Newbury)

Sarah baptised 2^nd September 1832 (died aged 10 months buried 11^th June 1833 at St Nicolas Newbury)

Charles baptised 18^th May 1834 (died aged 3 buried 16^th March 1837 at St Nicolas Newbury)

George baptised 28^th November 1836 (Abode recorded as Union Workhouse)

The 1841 census records Joseph (45), a Shoemaker, Jane (45), a Shoe Binder, Will (10)) and Geo (3) in the Newbury Workhouse.

The 1851 census records Joseph (59) as a Cordwainer living in Bartholomew Street Newbury with Jane (55) and their son George (15).

Jane died aged 63 in 1859 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15^th November.

The 1861 census records Joseph (69) (recorded as J Smith) as a Pauper Inmate in the Newbury Workhouse

He died aged 73 in 1861 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22^nd May.
