Mary Withers was born 1798 in Botley in Hampshire. She was baptized on 11 November 1798 at All Saints in Botley the daughter of George and Mary. Mary married John Hill on 5 February 1819 at St Mary in Greenham. John was born circa 1793 in Newbury.

 

John and Mary had eight children, the baptism dates at St Michael and All Angels in Enborne for the oldest seven below, the date for the youngest Fanny not yet found.

In the 1841 census John and Mary with children George, John, Eliza, Sarah and Fanny were living in Enborne Street in Newbury. John senior, George and john junior were all recorded as agricultural labourers.

 

Ten years later in the 1851 census John and Mary with daughters Eliza, Sarah and Fanny along with daughter in law Harriett Hill and her son Henry plus two lodgers were living in Old Newtown Road in Newbury. John was recorded as an agricultural labourer.

 

Mary died in March 1859 where her age was recorded as 62. She was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 19 March 1859.

 

A few months later Mary and John’s daughter Sarah died aged 25 and was buried on 30 July 1859 at Newtown Road Cemetery.

 

Sarah had a son Richard who was born in Newbury in 1858. He was baptized on 16 July 1859 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Richard died just a few weeks after his mother and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 19 August 1859.

 

There is no trace of John in the 1861 census nor any burial record in Newbury or surrounding villages.
