Caroline Salter (1857 – 1859)

Charles Salter was born circa 1836 in Newbury. He married Caroline Dowling in 1857 in Newbury. Caroline was born circa 1836 in Newbury.

Charles and Caroline had 5 children Caroline (1857), James (1859), Charles (1861), Mary (1863) and William Charles (1864). The two oldest were born in Newbury and the youngest three in Surrey.

Charles and Caroline’s daughter Caroline was born in April 1857. She was baptized on 27 December 1858 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Sadly, she died in January 1859 aged 19 months and was buried in Newtown Road Cemetery on 5 January.

In the 1861 census Charles and Caroline with sons James and Charles were living in Farnham in Surrey with Charles a bricklayer. Ten years later in 1871 the family was living in Wood Green in North London and then in 1881 they were living in Tottenham, North London.

Charles was brought by the police to Edmonton Workhouse on 24 June 1885 on account of his attempting to cut his own throat. He was very ill and placed under close watch and seemed to get better towards the end of the year and was allowed out of bed. Sadly, he committed suicide by cutting his throat in February 1886 and at an inquest a jury recorded a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane.

Caroline was recorded in the Edmonton Workhouse in the 1891 census with her occupation a charwoman. Then in the 1901 census she was recorded in Farnham Workhouse. She died in August 1902 in Farnham Workhouse and was buried on 20 August at St Michael in Camberley. Her son Charles was buried in the same church yard on 12 August 1862 aged 18 months.
