Edith Kate Vanderplank
1872-1932
Edith Kate Lucas was born in 1872 in Romsey, the illegitimate daughter of Emma Kate Lucas. She was baptised on the 29th December 1872 in Bramshaw Hampshire.
Her mother Emma Kate was born in 1855 in Southampton the daughter of John and Emma Lucas (nee Coles) who were married in 1840 in Southampton.
Edith’s mother, Emma Kate married in 1875

The 1881 census records Robert (29), as a Carpenter & Joiner, living in Longcroft, Basingstoke, Hampshire with Emma (26) and their children, Edith, (8), Leonard (5), Robert (2), Laura (10 months) and a lodger, Harry Gosling (21), a Butcher.
In 1891 Robert (39), (no occupation recorded for Robert, surname recorded as Vanderplaats on ancestry)) Emma (36) and their children Leonard (15), a Grocer’s Apprentice, Robert (13), Laura (10), Frederic (8), Emma (5) and Ethel (3), were living at 97 May Street, Basingstoke.
Edith (18) was working as a Domestic Servant, at 2 West End Villas, Winchester Road, Basingstoke, for a Bank Manager, Francis Lazenby (48) and his family. (Surname recorded as Vanduplank)
The 1901 census records the family living at 2 Brooke Street, Basingstoke. Robert (49) was recorded as a Joiner/Carpenter, Edith (28), was recorded a Restaurant Waitress and Emma (15), was recorded as a Fancy Trader Apprentice.
In 1911 Robert (59), Emma (56), Edith (38), Dorothy (19), Arthur (16) and 4 Boarders, Philip Henry Turner (60), a Journalist, Claude Hayes (58), an Artist (Landscape, watercolour and oil), Jessica Hayes (39) and Helen Page (42), living on her own means, were recorded living at The Litten Boarding House, Newtown Road, Newbury. Robert was recorded as the Boarding House Keeper, Edith and Dorothy were recorded as Assisting in the Business and Arthur was recorded as an Outfitter’s Apprentice at a Clothier’s Shop.
Edith’s father Robert died aged 72 on the 29th January 1924 at the Litten, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd February.
The 1930 Electoral Register records Edith Kate and her mother Emma Kate Vanderplank living at 3 Highfield Avenue, Newbury
Edith Kate died aged 58 on the 12th February 1932, she was laid to rest with Robert on the 15th February.
Her mother Emma Kate died 82 in 1937, in Bristol.
