The articles below contain information about Thomas Henry Quarrier.
Thomas Henry Quarrier
Thomas is likely to be the illegitimate son of Hannah Quarrier whose mother Mary (8421) is also buried in NRC. He was born on 11 May 1857 in Newbury.
It is likely that he was named after his Grandfather, Thomas Quarrier.
He died in July 1858, aged 14 months, from Scarlatina & was buried on 13 July 1858 in a common grave in consecrated ground at NRC.
His mother went on to marry (John)Charles Carter in 1863 & have 4 children. They returned to live in the Brentford, Middlesex area where her mother’s family came from. She died in 1923 in Warkworth House, Brentford Union Workhouse & was buried in the local cemetery.

Hannah Quarrier:
Hannah’s actual birth date is not known & it varies between 1829 & 1840 in the censuses. However, it is believed to be around 1830 in Newbury & she was baptised on 9 July 1834 at St Nicholas, Newbury so that narrows the dates. Her parents were Thomas & Mary Quarrier. He was a Tanner at the time of the baptism.
1841census: She is 7 & living with her widowed mother, Mary aged 30, in a Lodging House owned by Samuel Beckett in City,Newbury by the Bull & Dog Inn. (name mis-transcribed as Quirin)
1851 census: She is 16, born Newbury, Berkshire & still with her mother, 46, born Isleworth, Middlesex. They are now at Sarah Williams’ Lodging House in Old Newtown Road, Newbury. Mary has no occupation. (Name mis-transcribed as Quander).
1857 - 1858: Hannah is likely to have had an illegitimate son, Thomas Henry, who died, aged 14 months, in 1858 & is buried in Newtown Road Cemetery, Newbury. She was a Needlewoman when he was born & a Field Hand at the time of his death.
1863: Hannah married (John) Charles Carter in Newbury. He was born around 1830 in Twyford, Hampshire. They then moved back to the Brentford, Middlesex area, where her mother had come from, shortly afterwards.
1871 census: Living in Back Lane, King’s Place, Brentford. She is 41 & Charles 42. He was born in Twyford & is a labourer. They have 4 children: John Charles,7; Roseanna, 5; Charlotte,3 & William 10 months. All born in Brentford, Middlesex.
1881 census: Living at 1, Paradise Place, Ealing. Hannah & Charles are both 51 with Hannah being a Tailoress & Charles a Bricklayer. John Charles is 16 & a Labourer; Rose Ann, 14; Charlotte, 12 & at school as is William H who is 10.
There are also 2 lodgers.
1891 census: Hannah & Charles are both 62 & living at 1, Paradise Place, Ealing. Charles is a Bricklayer’s labourer. William is still at home, aged 20 & a Labourer. There is also a boarder.
1893: Charles died, aged 62, so again there were discrepancies with age like Hannah.
1901 census: Hannah is 70 & a widow working as a Market Gardening hand. She is living on her own at 8, Paradise Place, Ealing.
1911 census: There is an Annah Carter, 81 & widow living with William & Jessie Bowles, plus their 5 children, at 12, Pottery Road, Brentford. They have her down as born in Kent but not known where exactly. This could be Hannah.
1921 census: Hannah Carter, 81 years & 1 month is a patient & servant at Warkworth House, Twickenham Road, Isleworth. This was part of Brentford’s extensive Union Workhouse. She is recorded as being born in Newbury.
Her age is probably incorrect & she about 91.
1923: Hannah dies on 2 April, aged 94, in Ealing from senility & is buried in the Ealing & Old Brentford Cemetery. Her senility may account for her age & place of birth being confused in 1911 & 1921.
