Julia Ayres

Julia Ellen Ayres birth was registered in the March quarter 1854, in Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 23rd April 1854, Warblington, in the district of St James, Emsworth, Hampshire, the daughter of William and Ellen Ayers (nee Marchment) who were married on the 12th January 1852, at St Peter, Bishop’s Waltham, Hampshire.

Julia died aged 4 in 1858, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th June.

Julia’s family:

Her mother Elizabeth Ellen (aka Ellen) was baptised on the 2nd May 1830, in Bishop’s Waltham, Hampshire, the daughter of James (a Tailor) and Frances Marchment (nee Painter) who were married on the 22nd August 1827, at Holy Trinity, Gosport, Hampshire.

Julia’s father William was a Whitesmith. He was born c1824. William died aged 33, in 1857, He was buried on the 25th January, at St Maurice, Winchester, Hampshire.  

Julia’s siblings were:

William Alfred, baptised 11th July 1852, at Warblington, in the district of St James, Emsworth

Frances Emily, baptised 30th September 1855, at St Michael, Winchester

The 1861 census records Ellen (31), a Laundress, living in Cannon Street, Winchester, Hampshire, with her children, William (8) and Frances (5).

Ellen (40) was still working as a Laundress and was still living in Cannon Street, in 1871. Her son William (18) a Book Folder, was still living with Ellen.

Ellen remarried on the 17th September 1874, in Southampton, Hampshire. Her 2nd husband was a widower, Joseph McCarty.

The 1881 census records Joseph (52), a Foreman Cattle Shed, Ellen (51), Joseph’s daughter Jane (11), Ellen’s widowed daughter, Frances Frost (25), a Dressmaker and her daughter Ellen F. Frost (1 month), living at 4 Bridge Road, Southampton.

Joseph (62), Ellen (61), Joseph’s daughter Jane (21) and Ellen’s granddaughter Ellen Fances Frost (10), were recorded living at 26 Coleman Street, Southampton in 1891.

Joseph (72), Ellen (71), Joseph’s daughter Alice (37) and Ellen Frost (20) were still living at 26 Coleman Street, in 1891.

Joseph McCarthy died aged 72, in 1901, in Hampshire.

The 1911 census records Ellen (81) and her widowed daughter Frances Frost (55) (recorded as Fanny) as visitors, at 4 Beulah Terrace, High Road, Swaythling, Southampton, the home of Fredreick Russell and his family.

Ellen McCarty died aged 91, in 1921, in Southampton.
