Mary Read

John Read (1785 – 1863)

Mary Read (1786 – 1858)

 

John Read was born circa 1785 in Newbury, parents unknown. He married Mary Allen on 18 August 1806 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Mary was born circa 1786 in Newbury.

 

In the 1841 census John and Mary were living at 4 Hereford Place in Newbury along with Kitty Read aged 15 and William Read aged 8. John was recorded as a shoemaker.

 

Ten years later in the 1851 census John and Mary were living in Almshouses in Newbury along with daughter Sarah and grandson William Read aged 8. John was recorded as a postman and Sarah as a servant. Sarah married Francis Elliott in Newbury in 1855.

 

Mary died March 1858 aged 72 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 19 March 1858.

 

In the 1861 census John was living with his daughter Amelia Paddick, her husband James and son James in Church Almshouses in Pound Street.  James was recorded as formerly a postman, Amelia a laundress and her husband James a tailor.

 

James died May 1863 still living in the Almshouses aged 78 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 20 May 1863.

 

John and Mary’s daughter Sarah Elliott was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 21 April 1863.
