William Haines

c1828-1858

William was baptised on the 10^th August 1828, in Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire, the son of Joel and Eleanor Haines (nee Cooper) who were married on the 14^th October 1819, at St Mary, Thatcham, Berkshire.

William’s father Joel was baptised 22^nd July 1798, in Thatcham, the son of Joseph and Frances Haynes (nee Emmans) who were married on the 27^th October 1792, in Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire.

His mother Eleanor (aka Ellen) was baptised on the 29^th May 1803, in Midgham, Berkshire, the daughter of Thomas and Ann/Hannah Cooper (nee Childs) who were married at St Mary, Thatcham on the 20^th February 1798.

Joel and Eleanor also had the following children:

John, baptised 9^th April 1820, in Thatcham

Mary, baptised 12^th August 1821, in Hampstead Norreys

Thomas, baptised 23^rd November 1823, in Hampstead Norreys

Fanny, baptised 29^th January 1826, in Hampstead Norreys

William’s father Joel died aged 32, he was buried on the 23^rd May 1830, at St Mary the Virgin, Bucklebury, Berkshire.

His mother remarried as Ellen Hains on the 23^rd April 1832 at St Laurence, Reading, Berkshire. Her 2^nd husband was Job Hains. Job was Eleanor’s brother-in-law, Joel’s younger brother.

William and Ellen had the following children:

Job born 1849, baptised 5^th August 1849 at St Mary, Speenhamland Newbury (died aged 2, buried 31^st January 1852, as Job Haynes in the Newtown Road Cemetery)

Alice born 1851, baptised 29^th June 1851 at St Nicolas Church Newbury

William Job, born 1853, baptised 29^th April 1853 at St Mary, Speenhamland (died aged 5 months, buried 7^th September 1853, at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw cum Donnington)

The 1851 census records William (22) as a Corn Porter, living in West Street, Newbury with Ellen (23) and their children, Job (2) and Alice (6 weeks) (surname recorded as Harres on ancestry)

Slater’s Directory of Berkshire dated 1852, records William Haines as a Corn Porter of Carnarvon Place.

William was widowed in 1853. Ellen died aged 24, soon after giving birth to their son William Job. She was buried on the 30^th April, at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw cum Donnington.

 William remarried later that year.

Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter, Sarah Jane Hains in 1854. Sarah Jane died aged 1 in 1855. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28^th September.

Elizabeth died aged 33, the following year. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1^st March 1856.

William died aged 29 on the 24^th January 1858, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29^th January.

After his death his daughter Alice went to live with her grandparents Ellen and Job Haines.
