Dated 13th February 1858

On the 24th ult, William Haines, son of Mr. Haines, corn porter Newbury, aged 29 years. His end was peace.

William Haines

c1828-1858

William was baptised on the 10th August 1828, in Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire, the son of Joel and Eleanor Haines (nee Cooper) who were married on the 14th October 1819, at St Mary, Thatcham, Berkshire.

William’s father Joel was baptised 22nd July 1798, in Thatcham, the son of Joseph and Frances Haynes (nee Emmans) who were married on the 27th October 1792, in Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire.

His mother Eleanor (aka Ellen) was baptised on the 29th May 1803, in Midgham, Berkshire, the daughter of Thomas and Ann/Hannah Cooper (nee Childs) who were married at St Mary, Thatcham on the 20th February 1798.

Joel and Eleanor also had the following children:

John, baptised 9th April 1820, in Thatcham

Mary, baptised 12th August 1821, in Hampstead Norreys

Thomas, baptised 23rd November 1823, in Hampstead Norreys

Fanny, baptised 29th January 1826, in Hampstead Norreys

William’s father Joel died aged 32, he was buried on the 23rd May 1830, at St Mary the Virgin, Bucklebury, Berkshire.

His mother remarried as Ellen Hains on the 23rd April 1832 at St Laurence, Reading, Berkshire. Her 2nd husband was Job Hains. Job was Eleanor’s brother-in-law, Joel’s younger brother.

Bride: Ellen Cooke, spinster, abode, Thorn Street

Fathers: Job Haines and William Cooke

Witnesses: John Jordan and Mark Wiggins

(Ellen was baptised as Elinor in 1828 in Shaw cum Donnington, the daughter of William and Hannah Cook, her mother died aged 30 in 1832.Her father William remarried on the 23rd July 1832 in Speen. His 2nd wife was Lucy Chant/Church.)

William and Ellen had the following children:

Job born 1849, baptised 5th August 1849 at St Mary, Speenhamland Newbury (died aged 2, buried 31st January 1852, as Job Haynes in the Newtown Road Cemetery)

Alice born 1851, baptised 29th June 1851 at St Nicolas Church Newbury

William Job, born 1853, baptised 29th April 1853 at St Mary, Speenhamland (died aged 5 months, buried 7th September 1853, at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw cum Donnington)

The 1851 census records William (22) as a Corn Porter, living in West Street, Newbury with Ellen (23) and their children, Job (2) and Alice (6 weeks) (surname recorded as Harres on ancestry)

Slater’s Directory of Berkshire dated 1852, records William Haines as a Corn Porter of Carnarvon Place.

William was widowed in 1853. Ellen died aged 24, soon after giving birth to their son William Job. She was buried on the 30th April, at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw cum Donnington.

 William remarried later that year.

Marriage details:

Date: 9th October 1853

Groom: William Hains, aged 25, widower, occupation, Corn Porter, abode, Bridge Street

Bride: Elizabeth Pope, aged 25, spinster, abode: Bridge Street

Fathers: Job Hains, a Corn Porter and Charles Pope, a Shoemaker

Witnesses: John Jordan and Charlotte Jorden

Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter, Sarah Jane Hains in 1854. Sarah Jane died aged 1 in 1855. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th September.

Elizabeth died aged 33, the following year. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st March 1856.

William died aged 29 on the 24th January 1858, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th January.

After his death his daughter Alice went to live with her grandparents Ellen and Job Haines.
