Transciption:	SUDDEN DEATH – On Monday an inquest was held at the Borough Magistrates’ Chamber before J. Bunny Esq., coroner, on the body of William Butler, an old man who died suddenly on Saturday evening last, in Bartholomew Street. The deceased was assisting the boots, at the Jack of Newbury, in pushing a truck up the street, when he fell down, and expired immediately. The jury returned a verdict of “Died from the visitation of God.”

William Butler (17?? – 1857)

William Butler died on 6 November 1857 in Bartholomew Street in Newbury. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to find many details about William. There is no trace of the death being registered has been found so details such as his age or occupation or relatives are not known. Also, no age was recorded in the burial details found so far.

Two articles appeared in the local newspapers. The report in the Reading Mercury of 7 November 1857 read as below.

AWFUL INSTANCE OF SUDDEN DEATH – On Friday evening William Butler, an elderly man, late in the employ of Mr. H. Taylor, Northbrook Street, fell down in Bartholomew Street, and suddenly expired.

A report in the Berkshire Chronicle of 14 November 1857 read as below.

SUDDEN DEATH – On Monday an inquest was held at the Borough Magistrates’ Chamber before J. Bunny Esq., coroner, on the body of William Butler, an old man who died suddenly on Saturday evening last, in Bartholomew Street. The deceased was assisting the boots, at the Jack of Newbury, in pushing a truck up the street, when he fell down, and expired immediately. The jury returned a verdict of “Died from the visitation of God.”

William was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 11 November 1857.
