William James Venn 1869-1931

William James Venn

1869-1931

William was born James William Venn in Hungerford, Berkshire, the son of William James and Hester/Esther Venn (nee Head) who were married in 1869 (marriage registered in Wantage)

William’s father William James was a Bricklayer, he was baptised in Newbury in 1846, the son of James and Phoebe Venn (nee Warner) who were married in 1845 (marriage registered in Newbury)

His mother Esther was baptised in 1838 in Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Head (nee Church) who were married in Hampstead Norreys in 1832.

The 1871 census records William (1) living with his parents in Back Lane, Hungerford, Berkshire.

In 1881 Wiliam (11) was living in Hermitage, Berkshire, with his grandfather William Head (76), a Bricklayer and his aunt, Eliza Head (42), a Dressmaker.

William married in 1892

Marriage details:

Groom: William James Venn, aged 22, bachelor, occupation, Butcher, abode, Reigate

Bride: Isabella Thrift, aged 20, spinster, abode: Reigate

Fathers: William James Venn (deceased), a Mason and Boaz Thrift, (deceased) a Carpenter

(Isabella was born on the 16th January 1873 in Reigate, Surrey, the daughter of Boaz and Emily Thrift (nee Lucas) who were married in 1856, in Reigate).

The 1901 census records William James (31) as a Butcher, living at 126 Montague Street, Worthing, Sussex with Isabella (28), his mother Hester (61), living on her own means and a Frederick Ruff (17) a Burcher’s Assistant.

In 1911 Isabella (38), William (40) and William’s mother Esther Venn (73) were living at “Glenthorpe” Chesterfield Road, Newbury, Berkshire. William was recorded as a Commercial Traveller (Butchers Fitters)

By 1921 William and Isabella had moved to “Homeleigh” 56, Enborne Road, Newbury.

William James died aged 61 on the 9th September 1931, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th September.

The 1939 Register records Isabella as Incapacitated, living at 56 Enborne Road, Newbury with a Companion, Ada A Mundy.

 Isabella died aged 67 on the 27th December 1940, she was laid to rest with William James in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st December.

 

Probate: VENN William James of Homeleigh Enborne-road Newbury Berkshire died 9th September 1931 Probate Oxford 10th November to Isabella Venn widow. Effects: £3564 19s 3d
