Nellie Sylvester Barnsley
1880-1931
Nellie, her parents, brothers and early life:
Nellie was born in Walsall Staffordshire, the daughter of John and Sarah Ann Barnsley (nee Overall) who were married on the 5th June 1876, at St George, Camberwell, Surrey.
Nellie’s father John Barnesley was born in 1848 in Atherstone, Warwickshire, the son of Samuel and Jane Barnsley (nee Silvester) who were married on the 9th August 1840, in Mancetter, Warwick. John died 81, on the 19th August 1930 (death registered in Walsall).
Her mother Sarah Ann was born in 1850, in London, the daughter of George Frederick and Sarah Overall (nee Moorcroft) who were married on the 27th January 1840, in Bermondsey, Surrey. Sarah Ann died aged 57 in 1907 (death registered in Walsall).
John and Sarah Ann also had the following children:
William John, born 1882, in Walsall
Herbert Overall, born 1883, in Walsall
Howard Stanley, born 1886, in Walsall (died aged 1 in 1887)
The 1881 census records John (32) as a Gas Meter Inspector, living with Sarah (30), Nellie (8 months) and a Servant, in Rushall, Staffordshire.
In 1891 John (42), was recorded as a Relieving Officer, living with Sarah Ann (40), Nellie (10), William John (9), Herbert Overall (7) and a Servant, in Pleck Road, Walsall, Staffordshire.
Nellie in later life:
The 1901 census records Nellie (20) as a Teacher of Music, living at 2 Tasker Street, Walsall, with her father John (52) a Relieving Office, her mother Sarah (50), her brothers, William (19), an Architect Pupil, Herbert (17), an Accountant’s Clerk and her cousin, Ruby Overall (11).
In 1911 Nellie (30) was living with her widowed father John (62), a Relieving Officer, at 38 Bradford Street, Walsall.
Nellie died aged 50 on the 19th February 1931, at Ingleside Nursing Home, St John’s-road, Newbury. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd February.
