Mary Miller
She was born in Devizes, Wiltshire, and her first record is the registration of her birth on 7 November 1787 at the Baptist Chapel, Devizes. Her father married Sarah Alford on 28 March 1780. Her siblings were also recorded: Sarah born 30/12/1780; Ann born 27/9/1784; Samuel born 26/1/1790; John born 24/7/1795 and Martha born 6/8/1800.
Her father was a Master Tailor but in 1802 he sold all his stock and tools and all debts due to him were to be paid. The family moved to Newbury and in the 1815 census her father had become a Shoemaker working near Elkin’s Yard on the West Side of Bartholomew Street. His wife Sarah, sons Samuel and John, and his daughter Martha are also recorded.
Mary had by then married Joseph Miller, a Cabinet Maker, on 30 October 1813, at St. Nicolas Church. In the 1815 Joseph Toomer Census Joseph and Mary are living in Cattle Market Lane on the East Side of Bartholomew Street.
Her husband continued his work as a Cabinet Maker until he died on 11 October 1852 at their home in Madeira Place and she died two years later on 23 November 1854 at the age of 67 (calculated). She was buried on 29 November in the same plot as her husband. The grave inscription states she was 66 years old.
