Mary Stephens (1852 – 1854)

 

James Stephens was born circa 1807 in Crookham. He married Eliza Head on 23 July 1833 at St Mary in Hampstead Norreys. Eliza was born circa 1813 in Hampstead Norreys.

 

James and Eliza had six children all born in Newbury.

 

Joseph in 1844

James in 1847

John in 1848

Jane in 1849

Mary in 1852

William in 1857

 

It is possible that another daughter Mary Jane was born in circa 1859 in Newbury and possibly another daughter Martha in 1841.

 

In the 1851 census James and Eliza with three children were living in Eyles Farm House in Newbury with James an agricultural labourer.

 

James and Eliza’s daughter Mary died in October 1854 aged 2 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 28 October 1854.

 

In the 1861 census James and Eliza with daughter Jane aged 12, son William aged 4 and a probable daughter Mary Jane aged 2. James was still an agricultural labourer.

 

Mary’s brother Joseph died in February 1910 aged 65 and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 16 February 1910.
