William Boyer

William, his parents, siblings and early life:

William was born on the 30th December 1808 in Newbury, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 24th February 1809 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of William and Martha Boyer (nee Ruddle) who were married on the 14th February 1808 in Kingsclere, Hampshire (William was from Newbury, witnesses, Ann Ruddle, G. Boyer and Elizabeth Hobbs)

His father William was born c1778. William was the Publican at the Black Boys Hotel, Newbury. He was also a Town Serjeant of the Borough. He died aged 36, on the 28th September 1814 and was laid to rest on the 3rd October 1814 in Kingsclere, Hampshire.

His mother Martha was baptised in 1785 in Kingsclere, Hampshire, the daughter of William and Mary Ruddle

William and Martha also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church, Newbury:

Elizabeth, born 5th December 1810, baptised 3rd March 1811 (died 1875, buried in the family plot)

George born and privately baptised on the 26th October 1812

Clara, baptised 2nd January 1814 (William recorded as a Publican, of Bartholomew Street, Newbury) (Clara died in 1877, buried in the family plot)

In 1815 William (6) was living at the Black Boys Inn, on the east side of Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with his widowed mother Martha (29), his sisters, Elizabeth (4), Clara (1), a Charlotte Grant (24) and a James Roberts (48).

William’s mother Martha remarried on the 29th January 1825. Her 2nd husband was William Dredge, a Carpenter, born c1793 in Newbury.

Martha died aged 49 in 1835. She was buried on the 3rd July, in Kingsclere, Hampshire. (Abode at time of death, Bartholomew Street, Newbury)

William in later life:

William married Mary Ann Starbuck on the 31st May 1834 at the Chapel of St Paul, Hammersmith and Fulham, Middlesex. (Witnesses, Elizabeth Boyer, J. S. Starbuck and Eliza Starbuck)

(Mary Ann was born 26th June 1810, in Hammersmith Middlesex, she was baptised on the 5th August 1810, at St Paul, Hammersmith and Fulham, Middlesex, the daughter of James and Sarah Starbuck (nee Holloway) who were married on the 24th August 1809 in St Marylebone, Westminster)

William and Mary Ann had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

William, 19th July 1835 (died 1893, buried in the family plot)

Ellen, 8th May 1836 (died aged 36 in 1872, buried in the family plot)

George, 19th January 1838

Martha, 3rd May 1839

Clara, 26th October 1842 (died

Mary Ann, 16th August 1844

Frederick, 5th November 1847

Alfred, 9th November 1849

Eliza, 31st August 1851 (died aged 5 months on the 1st January 1852, buried in the family plot)

Charles, 30th January 1853 (died aged 4 yrs 8 months on the 31st August 1857, buried in the family plot)

(The 1835 and 1836 baptism records record William as a Publican (possibly the Black Boys Inn). The 1838-1853 baptism records record him as a Painter and Glazier, apart from Eliza’s baptism in 1851 which records him as a Painter and Plumber).

The 1841 census records William (31) as a Plumber, living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with Mary Ann (30) and their children, William (6) Ellen (5), George (3) and Martha (2).

The 1851 census records William (42) as a Plumber and Glazier, employing 8 men and 2 apprentices, living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with Mary Ann (40), William (15), a Painter’s Apprentice, Ellen (14), George (13), Martha (11), Clara (8), Mary Ann (6), Frederick (3) and Alfed (1).

William died aged 45 on the 15th July 1854, he was laid to rest in a family plot in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st July.

William left a Will, leaving among other assets, two freehold dwelling houses in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, shares and interest in 6 cottages in Kintbury, Berkshire and shares in the Newbury Cemetery Company. Probate was granted on the 11th December 1854.

The 1861 census records Mary Ann (50), Ellen (25), Martha (22), Mary Ann (16), Frederick (13) and Alfred (11), living at 72 Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

Mary Ann (60) and her daughter Ellen (34) were again recorded living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury in 1871 (surname recorded as Beyer on ancestry)

Mary Ann died aged 68 on the 9th May 1879, she was laid to rest in the family plot in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th May
