Mary Ashley

Mary was born in Southampton, Hampshire, she was baptised on the 3rd October 1830, St Mary, Southampton, the daughter of John and Mary Ann Ashley (nee Atack) who were married on the 31st October 1825 at St Mary, Southampton.

John and Mary also had the following two children baptised at St Mary Southampton:

Maria baptised 18th November 1827

William baptised 26th April 1829

Mary’s father John was born c1792 in Wilton, Wiltshire.

Mary’s mother was born c1801, place unknown. the 20th April in Southampton. She died aged 31 in 1832, she was buried on the 20th April in Southampton.

Her father remarried on the 10th January 1833 in Millbrook Hampshire. His 2nd wife was Unity Slade.

(Unity was baptised on the 29th April 1810 in Millbrook, Hampshire, the daughter of James and Sarah Slade nee Day, who were married in Millbrook on the 31st March 1807)

Mary’s half-siblings were:

Unity Rosina baptised 17th April 1834 (buried 25th April 1834)

James Slade baptised 23rd November 1834 in Southampton

Elizabeth born 1837 in Newbury

John born 1838 in Newbury

Samuel born 1840 in Newbury (died aged 4 in Southampton)

Sarah Louisa born 1842 in Southampton

Unity born c1846 in Southampton

Samuel born 1847 in Southampton (died in 1848 in Southampton)

The 1841 census records Mary as Mary Symons aged 10, living with Edward Symons (42), a Baker and Maria Symons (39) in St George, Hanover Square, Middlesex.  (all 3 were recorded as not being born in the County)

The 1851 census record Mary Ashley (20) living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with her aunt Maria Symonds aged 49, (born Wilton, Wiltshire) and her uncle, Edward Symonds aged 51, (born in Blissland, Cornwall) a Baker, employing 2 men, George Beal (19) and Henry Smith (15).

In 1841 John (36), a Baker, Unity (20) and their children Harriet (8), Elizabeth (3), John (2) and Samuel (1), were living in the City, Newbury, Berkshire (surname recorded as Asley on ancestry).

By 1851 John (54) was in receiving Parish Relief and was living at 13 Knights Passage, Holy Rood, Southampton, with Unity (35) and their children Elizabeth (13), John (11), Sarah (7) and Unity (5).

John died age 60 in 1852 in Southampton.

Mary died aged 22 on the 9th February 1853, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th February.
