Lucy Smithey

c1791-1852

According to the 1851 census Lucy was born in Freefolk, Hampshire. (Possible baptism: 27th November 1791, in Laverstoke, Hampshire, the daughter of John and Sarah Goodier).

In the 1815 census of Newbury, Lucy Coodcher (21), a servant and John Clements (30) were recorded living on the east side of the Bridge, in Newbury, Berkshire, the home of John King (45), a Mealman and his family.

Lucy Gudger married John Clements on the 4thAugust 1816, at St Nicolas, Newbury. Both were single, witnesses were Rich Powell and Ann Foster.

John Clements was a Miller. He was born c1781 (place unknown)

John and Lucy had the following children: (baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Harriet, 1st December 1816

Charles, 1stFebruary, 1818 (died aged 10 months, buried 11th November 1818, at St Nicolas)

James, 28thOctober 1821

Eliza, 24thAugust 1823

Charlotte, 4thNovember 1825

Lucy was widowed in 1825. John died aged 44, he was buried on the 26thOctober, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

Thomas and Lucy had the following children (baptised at S Nicolas, Newbury):

William, 31stAugust 1828 (died aged 2+ buried 23rdApril 1831, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Jane, 27thDecember 1829

Mary Ann, 12thJune 1831

Lucy, 31stMarch 1833

Susan, 21stJune 1835.

In 1841 Thomas Smithey (40), a Journeyman Bricklayer, Lucy (40) and their daughters, Jane (11), Mary Ann (9), Lucy (8), Susan (6) and Lucy’s daughter Charlotte Clements (15), were recorded living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury, Berkshire.

Lucy was widowed again in 1841, Thomas died aged 45, he was buried on the 11thDecember, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

The 1851 census records Lucy (60) a Charwoman and her daughter Susan (15), a Servant, (recorded as Susannah) living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury.

Lucy died aged 62, in 1852. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12thNovember.
