Transciption: | JOSEPH HUGHES Joseph Hughes (1798 – 1851)
Joseph was born 5 May 1798 at Thatcham the son of Thomas & Margaret Hughes. He was baptized 3 June 1798 at St Mary in Thatcham. Joseph married Sarah Purdue on 27 July 1828 at St Nicolas in Newbury. In the 1841 census Joseph & Sarah with son Henry aged 12 were recorded in the Union Workhouse in Newbury. Joseph’s brother Charles with his wife & children were also recorded in the Workhouse. Sarah died January 1842 aged 39 & was buried 28 January 1842 at St Nicolas in Newbury. In the 1851 census Joseph was still recorded in the Newbury Union Workhouse. Joseph died a few days after the census & was buried 25 April 1851 at Newtown Road Cemetery after a service at St Nicolas in Newbury.
