Esther Knight

Esther’s birth was registered in the March quarter 1851, in Newbury, Berkshire. She was the daughter of William and Sarah Knight (nee Penford) who were married on the 25th March 1833, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.

Esther died soon after she was born, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th April 1851.

Esther’s family:

According to census records her father William was born c1812 in Newbury, Berkshire.

Her mother Sarah was baptised in 1814 in Bramley, Hampshire the daughter of Jonh and Sarah Penfold

Esther’s siblings were (all baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury, except Mary Ann):

Sarah, baptised 30th March 1834

George baptised 10th May 1835

Mary Ann baptised 27th August 1836 in Greenham

William baptised 14th April 1839

Elizabeth baptised 29th November 1840

Caroline baptised 31st July 1842 1842

Jane baptised 29th March 1845

Hannah baptised 28th March 1847

Thomas batpsied 31st December 1848

Harriet Esther baptised 28th March 1852

Ellen baptised 29th July 1855

William was a Baker.  The 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 census records record the family living in Cheap Street, Newbury. (The 1851 census records William as the Bakery contractor for the Union Workhouse)

Sarah died aged 74 in 1889, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th February.

The 1891 census records William (79) living alone at 12 Kimber’s Almshouses, Newbury.

William died aged 88 on the 16th January 1900, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th January.
