WILLIAM FOUNTAINE

THE LATE MR. WILLIAM FOUNTAINE

The death took place at Clay Hill on Thursday last of Mr. William Fountaine, who for some time was a partner in the firm of Messrs Fielder and Fountaine, grocers, of Northbrook-street. He came to the town from Buckinghamshire as a traveller, and was afterwards taken into partnership for a period. Latterly he had suffered considerable illness.

The funeral took place at the Cemetery on Tuesday, the ceremony being conducted by the Rev. C. L. Jeayes.

The mourners were Miss Fountaine, Mrs. Widdows, and Mr. F. Fountaine, daughters and son, and Mr. and Mrs. Freemantle.

The coffin was polished elm, and was inscribed:

“William Fountaine

born January 31 1842

died July 24 1913

Messrs. Wintle had the arrangements.

                                       GRAVE OF THE MONTH/JU LY 2026           William Fountaine 1842-1913

 

William was the son of James and Mary Fountaine. He was born on 31st January 1842 at Stoke Hammond, Buckinghamshire. He came to Newbury town as a traveller.   William married Jane Stanmore in October 1870 in Newbury.  They had 3 children; Frederick, Linda and Isabel. 

William was in a business partnership for many years with Messrs Fielder and Fountaine, grocers of Northbrook Street. By 1890 the partnership had been dissolved. 

According to the 1891 census William was now recorded as a farmer living in Curridge, Newbury and also a farmer on the 1901 census living in Clay Hill, Newbury.
