Emmens.- April 28th, at 4 Hampton-road, Emma, widow of the late Henry Emmens, aged 81 years. - At rest after many years of suffering patiently borne.

Emma was born in 1849 in Farnborough Berkshire the daughter of John and Mary Breadmore (nee Painting) who were married in 1845 (marriage registered in Wantage).

 

John and Mary also had the following children:

Ann 1857

 

Emma’s father was recorded as a Woodman in 1851, 1871 and 1891 and an Agricultural Labourer in 1861, and 1881.

 

In 1851 Emma was living at Copse, Lower Farm, Farnborough with her parents and brothers Alfred and Mark. The family were still living in Farnborough in 1861. Her parents continued to live in Farnborough until their deaths. Mary died aged 80 in 1900 and John died aged 86 in 1902.

 

Emma married Henry Emmens in 1867 in Chaddleworth.

They had the following children:

Amelia 1874 (born in Leeds, died 1874 in Leeds)

Ada Ann 1875 (born in Leeds)

(Henry was an Agricultural/General Labourer, he was born c1842 in Chaddleworth the son of Thomas and Rachel Emmans (nee Powell) who were married on the 15th June1939 in Chaddleworth)

 In 1871 Emma Emmens (22), (recorded as Emmers on ancestry), Henry (28), their children, Rosa (2) and George (4 months) and Henry’s sister Mary (10) were recorded living in Chaddleworth.

 The 1881 census records Emma Emmans (32), Henry (37) and their children, Rosa (12), George (10), John (8) and Kate (2) (Kitty) living in School House Lane, Brightwaltham (Brightwalton) Berkshire.

 By 1891 the family were living in Newbury (Dredges Yard).  (family name recorded as Emans on ancestry).

 The 1901 census records Henry Emmens (57) living in Hampton Road Newbury with his children, Walter (17), Florence (11) and Ernest (4). Emma (52) was recorded in the household of her recently widowed daughter Ada Ann Swain (24) and her grandchildren Albert George Swain (4), Alfred Mark Swain (1) and Frances Emily Swain (5 days), at 2 Lamb Cottages, Enborne Road, Newbury.

 In 1911 Emma Emmens (62), Henry (68) and their son Ernest (14), a Grocer’s Errand Boy, were recorded living at 2 Gladstone Cottages, Hampton Road, Newbury.

 

Henry died aged 75 on the 25th October 1917, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st October.

 

Emma continued to live in Hampton Road until her death. She died aged 81 on the 28th April 1930 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st May.
