Transciption:

AN OLD TOWNSMAN
A well-known townsman in Mr. James Young passed suddenly away on Tuesday, February 8th at the age of 68. Deceased had been in failing health for some time, but feeling better started work again about three weeks ago, and was following his employment at the time in Albert-road, when he suddenly collapsed and died within about twenty minutes. The body was taken to Hampton-road to the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. Hosier, with whom he had been living for about eight years. The doctor being able to give a certificate, no inquest was required.

The funeral took place last Friday at the Old Cemetery, Newtown-road. The mourners were his four daughters and son, while at the graveside were noticed several townspeople to whom the deceased throughout life had been known.

The coffin was covered in flowers from his family, relations and friends. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. H.W. Trotter. Deceased had practically lived in Newbury all his life, and was in the Old Fire Brigade at the time of the destructive fire of 1878 in Church-lane, but now known as the Arcade, when the Captain was Mr. Henry Cullum, for whom he worked as a bricklayer for a good many years. Deceased also an old Forester.
