LAWRENCE READ THE LATE MR. LAWRENCE READ. – The funeral took place on Tuesday of Mr. Lawrence Read, L.D.S., who has been living in retirement at Greystairs, 8 Porchester-road, for several years. The interment was in Newbury Cemetery, the coffin being conveyed on a hand brier.
The Vicar of St. John’s (Rev. A.G.P. Baines) officiated and the mourners were Dr. Jonner Clarke (Executor), Dr. Bailey (Borden), Mrs. Carter-Baine, Mr. Gilbert Mallet, Mr. Arthur T. Watson. The floral offerings included: His two nieces, Dorrie and Laura; F.G. Hunt; T.E. Kemp, E. Spanswick, and A. Taylor.
The coffin plate was inscribed: “Lawrence Read, died January 7th, 1916, aged 66 years”. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Penford and Son, Northbrook-street.

Lawrence Read
1849-1916
Lawrence was born in Leamington Spa Warwickshire the son of James and Elizabeth Read (nee Lawrence) who were married on the 31st March 1838 of St James Westminster London. James was a Coach Painter/Coach Maker he was born c1815 in Surrey, he died aged 39 in 1855 in Leamington Spa. Elizabeth was born c1817 in Hampshire she died aged 43 in 1862 in Leamington Spa.
James and Elizabeth also had the following children:
Frederick James 1839 (died aged 15 in 1855)
Edward 1841
Emma 1843 (died 1845)
Mary Pope 1845
Emily 1847 (died 1849)
Lawrence (1) was recorded living at Portland Road Leamington Spa with his parents James (36) and Elizabeth (33) and his siblings Frederick James (12), Edward (9) and Mary Pope (3) in 1851.
The 1861 census records Lawrence (11) living in Portland Road with his mother Elizabeth (41), recorded as a Funded Proprietor and his sister Mary (15).
In 1871 Lawrence (21) was lodging in Mill Street Leamington Spa and was recorded as a Dentist Assistant
The 1881 census records Lawrence (32) as a Dental Surgeon, visiting another Dental Surgeon Gilbert Mallett and his family at Old Rectory Northbrook Street Newbury Berkshire.
In 1891 Lawrence (41) was again recorded as a Dental Surgeon, he was living at 18 Hanover Street, St George Hanover Square, Mayfair, London when the census for this year was taken.
By 1901 he was living on his own means lodging at Greenham Villa Newbury Berkshire with a William J Brothers and his wife Elizabeth.
The 1911 census records Lawrence (62), as a retired Dentist living at 8 Porchester Road Newbury with two servants.
He died aged 66 on the 7th January 1916 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th January
