GEORGE JARRETT

THE LATE MR. GEORGE JARRETT

The death took place on Christmas Eve of a very worthy man, George Jarrett, who in the course of a long life, played several parts. A native of Sussex, he was originally trained in the handicraft of woodwork, but subsequently turned his attention to gardening. He came into this district as gardener to the Rev. W. Nicholson, then Rector of Wickham and Welford, and in the church of that parish there are examples of his skill as a carver, particularly a figure of the patron saint holding in either hand the models of the sister churches.

In later years Mr. Jarrett came into Newbury as the joint proprietor of the Craven Nurseries, London-road. On relinquishing this venture, he resumed his occupation at the carving-bench at Elliott's Moulding Works, where he executed many artistic examples, which are found in churches and cathedrals in various parts of the country.

He also undertook the woodwork classes at the Technical Institute and the Grammar School, imparting much practical knowledge to the students. He was a man of great intelligence and took much pride in his work.

In his latter years he has been laid aside by infirmity, and his death at the age of 82 can only be regarded as the end of a long life usefully spent.
