MRS GIRLING
There has passed away, at the age of 96, one whom many may remember as a “character” in her way, though not by any means an eccentric. Left a widow for the second time while still a young woman, with two daughters, she embarked in business as a second hand Furniture dealer and became quite a familiar figure at all the local auction sales. A careful bidder, deaf to all chaff and banter sometimes indulged in by dealers from a distance, she held her own, quietly plodding on, and, backing her own judgment, was never carried away into any sensational prices for antiques, though occasionally securing prices for antiques, though occasionally securing a nice little bargain in that line as opportunity offered. Her shop in the London-road was always filled with good saleable articles, and, being satisfied with a reasonable “living profit,” she “turned over” a fair amount of goods in the course of a year. Possessed of a clear head and calm nerve, she pursued the even tenor of her way, and, in time, sold her business to the late Mr. W.J. Windsor, and retired into private life, the happy possessor of six houses, in one of which she dwelt till the completion of a ripe old age.
Of her daughters, one died young, and the other married and emigrated to Canada and is now living retired in Victoria, having three sons serving their King in France (the younger one being at home), one daughter, also in France as a Red Cross Nurse, and one married in Canada.
The funeral was on Saturday at the Old Cemetery, the Rev. C.V. Pike officiating. The mourners were Mr. Neate, Mrs. Gayfer, Miss Walter, Mr. and Mrs. King.
The undertakers were Messrs. A.J. Chivers, Cheap-street.
