William Alder

1860-1915

William was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Charles and Mary Ann Alder (nee Tidbury) who were married on the 23rd October 1842 (marriage registered in Newbury)

His mother Mary Ann was baptised on the 5th December 1824 at St Mary, Greenham, the illegitimate daughter of Hannah Tidbury. Mary Ann died aged 69 in 1892 in Woolwich.

His father Charles was baptised on the 29th March 1817 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, Berkshire, the son of John and Charlotte Alder (nee Langton) who were married on the 17th June 1809 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Charles worked as a Labourer/Agricultural Labourer. He died on the 3rd March 1880 (aged at death recorded as 66) in Newbury and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th March.

Charles and Mary Ann also had the following children:

Sarah Ann 1847 in Newbury

Hannah Maria 1849 in Newbury

Thomas 1851 in Newbury

Mary 1854 in Newbury

Eliza Matilda 1858 in Newbury

Charlotte c1864 in Newbury

John Henry 1866 in London

The family were recorded living off Bartholomew Street, (possibly Hereford Place) Newbury in 1851, Caroline Place Newbury in 1861 and off Northbrook Street, (Independent Chapel Yard) Newbury in 1871.

The 1881 census records William (20) as a Tinman, living in Cromwell Place, Newbury with his widowed mother Mary (60) an Upholsteress, and his brother John Henry (14).

He died aged 55 in 1915 in the Newbury Infirmary and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th October. (GRO and freebmd websites record age at death as 55, burial record records age at death as 53)
