Willliam John Piddington
1866-1915
William, his parents, siblings and early life:
William John was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Amos (a Carpenter) and Anne Piddington (nee Adams) who were married in 1866 (marriage registered in Newbury)
His father Amos was born in 1839 in Kingston upon Thames, Oxfordshire, the son of Thomas (a Carpenter) and Sarah Piddington (nee Shippen) who were married on the 31st October 1829 in Aston Rowant, Oxfordshire. Amos died aged 52 in 1891, he was buried on the 6th May at St Mary the Virgin Speen
His mother Ann(e) was born in 1843 in Speen, Berkshire, the daughter of John (a Blacksmith) and Sarah Adams (nee Marshall) who were married in 1839 (marriage registered in Newbury). Anne Piddington died aged 44 in 1890, she was buried on the 18th January at St Mary the Virgin Speen.
Amos and Ann(e) also had the following children (all births registered in Newbury):

Sarah Kate 1871
Isabella Annie c1873
Emily Clara 1874 (died aged 19 months in 1875, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th December)
Clara c1878 (died aged 11 days, buried on the 19th March at St Mary the Virgin Speen)
In 1871 Amos (31) was working as a Journeyman Carpenter and was living at 1 Stone’s Yard, Newbury with Anne (27) and their children Wiliam (4) and Ellen (1). Also recorded in the household was Anne’s father John Adams (60), a Blacksmith and a Lewis Adams (3).
The 1881 census records Amos (41), a Carpenter, Anne (35), William John (14), Ellen (11), Sarah Kate (9) and Isabella (8), living in Backway, Speenhamland, Berkshire.
William in later life:
William John married Bertha Mary Davis in 1885 (marriage registered in Newbury)
(Bertha Mary was baptised on the 29th April 1866 in Hungerford, Berkshire, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Davis (nee May) who were married in 1860 (marriage registered in Newbury)
William and Bertha had the following children (all births registered in Newbury):
William John born 1885 (died aged 31 on the 29th July 1916 in France in WW1)
Charles Arthur Owen born 1888 (died aged 8 months in 1889, buried Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th April).
Ethel Maud born 1890
Stillborn child born 1894 (buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th May)
Arthur James born 1895 (died aged 0 in 1896, buried in the NRC on the 7th March)
Alfred James born c1897 (died aged 14 in 1911, buried in the NRC on the 16th March)
Sarah Annie born c1900
In 1891 William (24) was working as a Carpenter, he was living at 2 Craven Court, Newbury, with Bertha (24) and their children, William (5) and Ethel (11months).
The 1901 census records William (35) working as a Wood Moulding Sawyer at a Joinery Works, living at 4 Albert Road, Newbury, with Bertha (36) and their children, William (15), Maud (12), Alfred (4) and Annie (1).
In 1911 William (44) was recorded as a Carpenter, living at 1 Albert Terrace, Albert Road, Newbury, with Bertha (45) and their daughter Sarah Annie (11).
William John Piddington died aged 48, on the 9th June 1915, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th June.
Bertha Mary Piddington died aged 69, on the 24th February 1934, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st March. (Abode at time of death, 57 Camp Close, Newbury)
