FUNERALS AT NEWBURY
THE LATE MR.LOCKYEAR
On Wednesday, the 6th inst., the funeral of the late Mr. George Outen Lockyear, of Newtown-road, took place. The deceased was well-known in the town, especially amongst builders’ merchants etc., having been connected with the late firm of Messrs. Jackson and later their successors, Messrs. Edwards and Golding, for the long term of 51 years. He was also a very old member of the Brighton branch of Oddfellows.
The remains, enclosed in a polished elm coffin, with the inscribed breastplate,
“George Outon Lockyear, [sic] died January 1st, 1915, aged 50 years”
was conveyed to St John’s Church, where the first part of the service was read by the Rev. H.W. Trotter, and thence to the Newbury Cemetery.
The mourners were Mr.Charles Lockyear (son), Miss Emily Lockyear, Miss Nellie Lockyear, Mrs. Matthews, Miss Jane Lockyear (daughter), etc

George Outon Lockeyear
He was born c. 1835 in Lewes, Sussex, son of William and Sophia Lockeyear. He married his first wife, Sarah Harman, in 1858 in Brighton. By 1861 he is lodging at Windsor Place, Newbury, a widower: occupation Ironmonger’s Assistant. He married his second wife, Sarah Stone, in 1862 in Newbury. By 1871 they are living at 3 Winchcombe Place and have 4 children, Alice Maria (b.1865), Walter Charles (b.1867), Emily Kate (b.1868) and Ellen Gertrude, age 7 months. In 1881 they are living at 12 Winchcombe Place with 4 more children - William (b.1873), Edwin (b. 1875) Amy M. (b.1879) and Jane Stone (b.1881). By 1901 they have another son Henry (b.1886) and they are living at 14 Carnarvon Street. In 1911 George and his wife Sarah are living at 7 Church Almshouses. He died aged 80 years on 1 January 1915 and he is buried with his wife Sarah and his father-in-law Thomas Stone.
