She had only been on the staff about two months, and serious illness developed three weeks ago. An attack of haemorrhage proved fatal. She was nineteen, and had proved very popular among the patients. The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, at Newbury Cemetery, the Rev. A. G. P. Baines officiating. The mother and other relatives, with all the nursing staff who could be spared from duty, together also with other nurses in the district were present.

The articles below contain information about Sybil Ethel Roberts.
Sybil Ethel Roberts was born on the 6th of May 1895 in the registration district of St. George, Hanover Square, London she was the daughter of William and Ethel Roberts.
Nothing can be found of her childhood but Sybil was on the nursing staff of Newbury District Hospital at the time of her death in 1914. Perhaps with the prospect of war looming Sybil decided she wanted to do her bit but why she ended up in Newbury remains a mystery as her parents were still living in London.
Tragically Sybil contracted typhoid while nursing at Newbury Hospital where she died on the 8th of June 1914 aged only 19 years. Her death certificate records that the typhoid fever lasted 21 days and secondary cause of death being haemorrhage. Sybil’s mother Ethel came from London and was present at the time of her daughter’s death.
Sybil was buried in Newtown Road Cemetery, the inscription on her gravestone reads.
To the memory of
Sybil Roberts daughter of William and Ethel Roberts of London.
