WILLIAM HIGGS

THE LATE MR. WILLIAM HIGGS

The death has taken place of Mr. William Higgs, a well-known Newbury tradesman, who passed away at his private house, Newtown-road, on Monday morning last.
The deceased came of an old Newbury family, which has been settled in the town for generations. The father was one time connected with some of the old-time industries which are now dead, but later on established the fancy business in Cheap-street, which has been continued ever since, though altered somewhat from its original lines.
Mr. Higgs had not been ill for a long time, indeed he had been in business until recently, and it was only a week or two ago that his illness — an affection of the heart-had taken a really serious turn.
He married Miss Westcombe the elder daughter of Mr,. George Westcombe, proprietor of the Bartholomew-street Brewery, now merged into South Brewery. There is one son, who with his mother, survives the deceased.
Mr. Higgs did not take a prominent part in public affairs, though for many years he was connected with the Volunteers, rising to the rank of Colour-Sergeant.
The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon. The body was conveyed to the Cemetery Chapel, where the service was conducted by the Rev. T. Chark (sic) Edwards.
The mourners were the widow and son, two brothers, Messrs Arthur and Herbert Higgs, Rev. Arthur Westcombe, Rev. J. Westcombe, Mr. J. Bradfield, Mrs.Bradfield, Mrs. James Westcombe, Mr.C. Westcombe, Mr. S. Walter, Mrs. Walter, Mr. T. Garlick, Mr. John Webb, etc. A number of old friends showed their respect by gathering around the open grave, the ceremony at which was altogether impressive. At the wish of the family, there were no flowers. Mr. Plumb was undertaker.
