Margaret Elliott (1825 – 1911)

Elizabeth Ann Elliott was baptized 22 April 1823 and her sister Margaret on 13 November 1825 both at St Mary the Virgin in Aldermaston. Elizabeth Ann was probably a twin as her sister Martha was baptized on the same day. Their parents were Stephen and Margaret, nee Steptoe, Elliott.

In the 1851 census Margaret was recorded with her brother Thomas living in Aldermaston. Thomas was recorded as a butcher and farmer of 60 acres employing two men and a boy but Margaret had no occupation recorded. Elizabeth Ann has not been traced in the census.

Elizabeth was recorded as a house servant living in Speen in the 1861 census while Margaret was a domestic cook at The Parsonage in Caversham.

Ten years later in the 1871 census Elizabeth was a house servant living at 2/4 Elizabeth Place in Reading while Margaret was probably a domestic servant in Tilehurst.

In the 1881 census Elizabeth was living at Prior Court House in Chieveley and recorded as a housekeeper. Margaret was a domestic cook at The Rectory in Bright Waltham.

Elizabeth and Margaret were recorded together in Hoe Benham in the 1891 census with Elizabeth a housekeeper and Margaret a nurse.

Ten years later in the 1901 census Elizabeth and Margaret were living at 4 Church Almhouses in Newbury with neither having an occupation recorded. They were still living in the same house in the 1911 census.

Elizabeth died May 1911 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 June 1911. Margaret died six months later in November 1911 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 9 November 1911.

Elizabeth and Margaret’s parents were also buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, their father Stephen on 7 July 1860 and mother Margaret on 21 January 1864. In addition, their brother William was buried at Newtown Road on 4 November 1892 and their sister Martha Sandford on 1 June 1894.
