Elizabeth Geater
1828-1911
Elizabeth was born on the 18th September 1828, in Greenham, Berkshire. She was baptised as Elizabeth Barker on the 12th October 1828, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the illegitimate daughter of Richard Barker (a Chinaman) and Charlotte Vince.
Elizabeth’s mother Charlotte Vince was baptised in 1807, in Greenham, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Sarah Vince (nee Tucker) who were married in 1802, in Shaw cum Donnington, Berkshire. Charlotte married Charles Bull on the 17th November 1835, in Thatcham Berkshire. Charles and Charlotte had a son Henry, born c1837, in Greenham, Berkshire.
The 1841 census records Elizabeth Vince (10) living in Stroud Green, Greenham, Berkshire, with her mother Charlotte Bull (30), her half-brother Henry Bull (4) and her grandparents, William Vince (60) and Sarah Vince (60)
Elizabeth Vince married David Geater in 1847 (marriage registered in the September quarter, in Newbury)
(David was born c1826, in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Lawrence and Mary Geater (nee Blackman) who were married on the 29th July 1811, in East Woodhay, Hampshire. (Both were from Newbury).
David and Elizabeth had the following children:
Jane, c1847 (possibly born before her parents married as Mary Jane Vince, birth registered in the Sept. quarter 1847)
Eliza, c1849 (died 1849)
Sarah, 1850
Isabel c1854
Frank, c1856
Alfred, 1857
Henry James, 1860
Rose, 1863
The 1851 census records David (25), a Journeyman Bricklayer, Elizabeth (23), Jane (4) and Sarah (1), living in Newbury Yard, Greenham, Berkshire.
In 1861 David (36), a Bricklayer, Elizabeth (36), Jane (13), Sarah (11), Esable (8), (Isabel) Alfred (4) and Henry George (1), (Henry James) were living in Greenham.
The 1871 census records David (45), a Journeyman Bricklayer, his children, Isabel (20), Alfred (14), Henry George (11) and Rose (7) and his granddaughter Kate (1), (Kate was mistakenly recorded as his daughter, she was the illegitimate daughter of Isabel Geater) living in Albert Place, Newbury (No record found for Eizabeth)
In 1881 David (54) and Elizabeth (52) were living in Westfields, Newbury.
The 1891 census records David (65), a Bricklayer and his daughter Rose (27), a Dressmaker, living at 26A Bartholomew Street, Newbury. Elizabeth (62) was recorded working as a Nurse in Waterloo Villa, Craven Road, Newbury, the home of Robert Stevens (78).
In 1901 David (75) and Elizabeth (72) were living at 15 New Church Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury.
The 1911 census records David (85), who was nearly blind and Elizabeth (84) living at 15 New Church Almshouses. Their daughter Rose (40), a Dressmaker was also recorded living with them, as their carer.
Elizabeth died aged 83 on the 4th October 1911. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th October.
David died aged 87, on the 19th April 1912. He was laid to rest with Elizabeth on the 24th April.
(David and Elizabeth’s daughters, Isabel Geater (c1854-1936) and Rose Titcombe (1863-1947) are also recorded on their parents Memorial Inscription. Both died in Wokingham. Isabel was buried at St Mary’s Cemetery, Shinfield, Berkshire)
