THE LATE MISS MARY WASEY
A LOCAL BENEFACTRESS
The death occurred on Thursday last of Miss Mary Wasey at her residence, Foscote, Donnington Square, where she lived with her sister, Miss Wasey. The deceased lady had been ailing for but a short time, and medical aid proved unavailing. She was a daughter of the Rev. J. Spearman Wasey, who was vicar of Compton for many years, and all her life she has resided in the district.
She was imbued with a very strong feeling of local patriotism, doing everything she could not only for Newbury and district institutions , but also for the trade and well-being of the neighbourhood. Miss Wasey was a philanthropist, a good scheme or institution was never left unsupported, while her private benefactions were many and considerable. For many years she was local secretary of the N.S.P.C.C., and during her life had devoted herself to the welfare of children. She was a strong supporter of the Children’s Hospital at Cold Ash, and gave time, money and hard work for its benefit.
Miss Wasey was also strongly identified with St Mary’s Speenhamland Church. She was one of the ladies whose life was spent in doing good to her fellow citizens, and will be greatly missed, not only by a large circle of friends, but also by many who knew her to be a true helper in all times of trouble.
The funeral
The funeral took place on Monday afternoon at the Old Cemetery and was attended by a large number of people. The service was conducted by the Rev. W.J. Holloway, vicar of Speenhamland, the first part taking place in the Chapel, whilst the interment was in the south portion of the cemetery.
The principal mourners were Mrs. H.P. Howard (sister), Mr. George Wasey, Mr. Lionel Wasey (brothers), Mrs.Price (aunt), Mrs. Lionel Wasey, Mrs. George Wasey, etc.
Long list of mourners follows - see photo below for full details The bearers were four of the local police force in which Miss Wasey always took a great personal interest… The coffin was inscribed “Mary Caroline Wasey, aged 66. Rest in peace.” Newbury Weekly News 27 June 1929 Mrs. P. p.33 4A d. 20 June 1020 aged 66 Bk. 1917 p. 137 No. 10692 Born Mar Q 1863 Buried 24 June 1929 |
