John Henry Axford 1828-1911

John Henry Axford

1828-1911

John was born on the 10th March 1828, he was baptised on the 16th July 1828 at St Leonards, Shoreditch, London, the son of Joseph William (a Shoemaker) and Sarah Axford (nee Wallis) who were married on the 19th September 1824 at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, London.

Joseph William and Sarah also had another son, Joseph Rosamond baptised on the 5th December 1830 at St George in the East, Tower Hamlets,

In 1841 John (13) was living in Cornwell Street, St George, Middlesex with his father Joseph (40), a Cordwainer, his mother Sarah (40) and his brother Joseph (10).

John was recorded as a Shoe Maker Manager in 1861, a Manager to a Bootmaker in 1871, and a Manager of a Boot Shop in 1881, 1891 and 1901. The 1911 census records him as “late a Boot Salesman Manager”

He married in 1848

Bride: Cecelia Elizabeth Tilly, full age, spinster, abode, Stepney

Fathers: Joseph Axford, an Auctioneer and William Tilly, a Carpenter

Witnesses: H. Hazeldine and Rosann Morrison

 

John and Cecelia had the following children:

Agnes Louisa 1849 in Stepney (died aged 2 in 1851)

Cecilia c1851 in St George in the East (died 1851)

Emily Elizabeth 1853 in Stepney

Grace Sarah 1856 in Stepney (died 1856)

Walter Henry 1858 in Uxbridge (died 1859)

In 1851 Cecilia (24), a Dressmaker and her two children Agnes Louisa (1) and Cecilia (1 month) were living with her mother Elizabeth Till(e)y (50), a Needlewoman and her brother William Till(e)y (13) in Stepney.

The 1861 census records John (30) living in Limehouse Middlesex with Cecilia (30) and their daughter Emily (6).

In 1871 John (43), Cecelia (44), a Dressmaker and Emily (17) were living in Roman Road, Bethnal Green, Middlesex.

Cecilia Eliabeth died aged 51 in 1878. (Death registered in Hitchin, Hertfordshire). John Henry remarried later the same year. His 2nd wife was Hannah Edmonds. (Hannah was born in Luton Bedfordshire)

The 1881 census records John (53) living in the High Street, Hitchin Hertfordshire, with Hannah (50).

The 1891 census records John (55) and Hannah (50) living at 9 & 10 High Street, Chelmsford Essex.

Hannah died aged 61 in 1892 (death registered in Rye Sussex). John married again later that year in Rye. His 3rd wife was Elizabeth Turner.

The 1901 census records John (65) and Elizabeth (62) living at 4 Larkview Terrace, Boundary Road, Newbury, Berkshire. (Surname spelt Oxford on ancestry)

 

The 1911 census records John (81) living at 23 Connaught Road, Newbury with Elizabth (73).

John Henry Axford died aged 83 on the 13th August 1911, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th August. (His death has been mistakenly registered as Henry John Axford)

Elizabeth died aged 75 on the 30th January 1913, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd February.
