1838-1911

 

Simon was born in Newbury in 1838 the son of Stephen & Phoebe Taylor (nee Trueman) who were married on the 17th November 1823 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Stephen was a Tinman & Brazier born c1801 in Newbury. Phoebe was born c1805 in Newbury

In 1841 the family were living in Northbrook Street Newbury but by 1851 they had moved to Northcroft Lane.

Simon was a Plumber in 1861 he was still living at home with his parents in Northcroft Lane.

His father died aged 63 in 1862 he was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th March.

His mother died aged 68 six year later, she was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th May 1868.

 

 Simon married Emma Watts in Newbury in 1866.

(Emma was born c1843 in St Austell Cornwall the daughter of William and Hannah Watts (nee Trestain) who were married in St Austell in 1837. The Watts family lived in Cornwall until c1848 but by 1850 they had moved to Newbury, the 1851 census records William as a Wheelwright Journeyman living Chapel Yard with the family. In 1861 Emma (17) was working as a Dressmaker and was living in Waterloo Place Newbury with her parents and siblings.)

 

Simon and Emma had the following children (all born in Newbury):

In 1871 Simon (33), Emma (28) and their children, Samuel (4), Emily (3) and Annie (9 months), were living in Waterloo Place Newbury (next to Emma’s parents).

The 1881 and 1891 census records also record the family living in Waterloo Place. Simon continued to live in Waterloo Place until his death in 1911. He was recorded in both the 1901 and 1911 census as a widower, living alone. The 1901 census records him as self-employed and the 1911 census records him as a Retired Plumber.

He died aged 73 on the 19th June 1911 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st June
