Mary Eastman
1832-1911
Mary Viner was baptised on the 15th April 1832 in Hungerford Berkshire she was the daughter of James & Charlotte Viner (nee Titcomb) who were married on 18th October 1829 at Shaw-cum-Donnington.
Other children of James & Charlotte were:
Jane baptised 20th June 1803 in Hungerford William baptised 7th May 1834 in Hungerford
Mary’s mother Charlotte died aged 29 in 1837 she was buried on the 17th September 1837 at St Lawrence Hungerford.
In 1838 her father James Viner married Elizabeth Eastman (surname recorded as Easman) who already had 2 sons, William born in 1823 and Joseph born in 1834.
In 1839 Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter Eliza.
In both the 1841 and 1851 census records Mary was recorded living at Greenham Mills Newbury, with her father, step-mother, siblings and step-siblings. Her father James was recorded as a Tanner.
In the 1861 census Mary was recorded as a lodger, occupation: Silk Weaver, living in Greenham Mills with her step-brother William Eastman (born 1823) and his family.
William Eastman’s wife Eliza died aged 42 she was buried in Greenham on 25th September 1865.
In 1870 Mary gave birth to an illegitimate son, Henry.
In 1871 Mary (aged 32) was again recorded living with her step-brother William and his children. She was recorded as a Lodger and Housekeeper living in Bradley’s Yard in the parish of St Nicolas Newbury. William and Mary married later that year.
Mary became a widow in 1873.William died age 50 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on 5th November.
In 1875 Mary’s son Henry (now known as Henry Eastman) died aged 5 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th February.
In 1881 Mary was recorded as being deaf, living at 5 St Mary’s Court Newbury, her step-son William Eastman aged 26 was living with her at this time, she was still living at St Mary’s Court in 1891 but was living alone. The 1901 census records Mary living at 14 Newmarket Street Newbury, in this census she was recorded as being very deaf.
Mary died aged 80 in 1911 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th February.
