FREDERICK SNOOK

THE LATE POSTMAN SNOOK

The funeral of the late Mr. Frederick Snook, who was for many years rural postman to Wash Common, Enborne and East Woodhay, took place on Thursday, June 9, at Newbury Cemetery. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. R. Wickham Legg. Besides the mourners a deputation of postmen, representing the present staff of the Newbury Office, attended, and there were also present two retired postmen, Messrs. Freeman and Langton.

The mourners included Messrs F.J. Snook, S.G. Snook, A.E. Snook, W. Snook and H. Snook (sons), Mr. ?. Snook (nephew) Highclere; Mrs. F.J. Snook, Mrs. S.G. Snook, Mrs. A.E. Snook, Mrs. W. Snook (daughters-in-law), Mrs. J. Taylor (sister-in-law), Miss Gardener.

There follows a list of those sending wreaths.

The late Mr. Snook retired from the Postal service in 1902, after being allowed an extra five years under the department. He was a postman 35 years, and it was calculated that during that time he had covered an immense distance approximating 200,000 miles. Latterly he used a tricycle, and it was principally owing to this he was able to keep on as long as he had. He rented a piece of land at Woodhay which he cultivated during this time between his journeys, and which he continued to look after almost up to his death, which took place on June 3rd, at the advanced age of 73 years.
