Charles Joseph Tallyn
1877-1910
Charles was born on the 14th November 1877 in Ilfracombe, Devon, he was baptised (Methodist), on the 15th January 1878 in Ilfracombe, the son of Joseph and Jane Tallyn (nee Reed) who were married in 1875 in Devon.
His father Joseph was born in 1853 in Bratton Fleming, Devon. He died aged 62 on the 5th June 1915 at the General Hospital, Birmingham.
His mother Jane was born in 1851 in Marwood Devon. She died aged 42 in 1893 (death registered in Barnstable)
Joseph and Jane also had the following children (all baptised Methodist in Ilfracombe):
Janet Reed born 11th August 1876, baptised 26th September 1876 (died aged 24 in 1901 in Hungerford)
Annie Mary 30th August 1879, baptised 28th October 1879
Arthur William born 22nd October 1881, baptised 13th December 1881
Hubert Edward born July 1884, baptised 5th August 1884
Wilfrid Reed born 2nd January 1886, baptised 9th February 1886
Harry Percival born 15th October 1887, baptised 22nd November 1887
John Lancey born 12th March 1889, baptised 19th April 1889
In 1881 Charles (3) was living at 4 Northfield Cottage, Ilfracombe, Devon with his father Joseph (27), a Carpenter, his mother Jane (29) and his sisters Janet (4) and Annie (1).
The 1891 census records Charles (13) and his sister Janet (14) visiting their uncle, William Tallyn (46), a Framer, at Rye Park, Bratton Fleming, Devon. Their father Joseph (37) was recorded as a Builder and Undertaker Living at Mill House, Ilfracombe, with the rest of the family.
His father Joseph remarried on the 9th June 1898 at St Peter and St Paul, Aston, Warwickshire, his 2nd wife was Emma Williams.
The 1901 census records Charles (23) as a Joiner, living in Down View, Hungerford, Berkshire with his father Joseph (47) a Foreman Joiner, his stepmother Emma (45) and his siblings Annie Mary (21), Hubert Edward (16), an Apprentice Joiner, Wilfrid Reed (15), an Errand Boy, Harry Percival (13) a Telegraph Messenger and John Lancey (12).
Charles married Florence Elizabeth Mogridge in 1907 in Devon
(Florence was born in 1877 in Trentishoe, Devon, the daughter of John and Agnes Mogridge (nee Tucker) who were married in 1876 in Devon)
By 1910 Charles and Florence were living in Craven-street, Newbury, Berkshire.
Charles died aged 32 on the 15th April 1910, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20th April.
The 1911 census records Florence as a Dressmaker, living at 10 Craven Street, Newbury. Her sister-in-law Annie Mary Tallyn, a Restaurant Manageress and a boarder, Dorothy Clara Baker, a China Shop Assistant were also recorded living with her.
Florence died aged 55 on the 9th June 1933 at 32 Priory Road, Newbury, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th June. (Priory Road was not her address, at the time of her death, her probate record records her address as 27 Craven Road, Newbury)
Probate: TALLYN Charles Joseph of 10 Craven-street Newbury Berkshire journeyman joiner died 15th April 1910 Probate Oxford 4th August to Florence Elizabeth Tallyn widow. Effects: £146 13s 3d
