Sarah Stone

c1838-1910

Sarah was born c1838, in St Martin in the Fields, Middlesex, the daughter of James (a Shoemaker) and Sarah Ann Hadden (nee Rose), who were married on the 21stOctober 1832, at St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire.

Her father James was baptised on the 30thAugust 1807, in Woolwich, Kent, the son of James and Lucy Hadden (nee Salmon) who were married on the 16thFebruary 1806, at St John the Baptist, Eltham, Kent. James doed aged 71, in 1878, in Greenwich, Kent.

Her mother Sarah was born c1804, in Northchurch, Hertfordshire, the daughter of George Rose.

James and Sarah also had the following children:

Lucy, born 27th September 1833, baptised 23rd March 1834, at Marshall Street, Regent St. Craven Chapel (Indepentent)

James, born c1835

Andrew George, born c1840 (died aged 2, buried 7th Feb. 1842 at St Martin in the Fields, Middlesex)

In 1841 James (30), a Shoemaker, Sarah (30), Lucy (7), James (6), Sarah (4) and Andres (18 months), were recoded living in Dorset Place, St martin in the Fields, Middlesex.

In 1851 Sarah (15) was working as a General Servant, for an Ann (34) and John Cubbard (38), a Grocer, at Gothan Cottages, Albion Road, Brompton, Hammersmith, Middlesex.

The 1861 census records Sarah (24) working as a House Servant, for an Eliza (33) and William Scott (38), a Dentist, at Uxbridge House, Uxbridge Road, Ealing, Middlesex.

Sarah married in 1863

Groom: James Stone, full age, bachelor, occupation, Gardener, abode, Kensington

Bride: Sarah Hadden, full age, spinster, abode, Ealing

Fathers: John Stone, a Farmer and James Hadden, a Bootmaker

Witnesses: James Hadden and E. Hadden

(James was born c1838, in Kingston Bagpuize, Berkshire, the son of John and Ann Stone (nee Franklin) who were married on the 12thNovember 1834, at St Giles, Oxford).

James and Sarah had the following children:

Sarah Lucy, born 1864, in Kensington (died aged 5, buried 17th June 1870, in East Woodhay)

Walter James, born 1866, in Newbury (died aged 4, buried 4th July 1870, in East Woodhay)

Bertha Annie, born 1871, in East Woodhay, Hampshire

Martha Rose, born 1874, in Knightsbridge Hampshire

 

In 1871 James (33), a Gardener/Domestic Servant, Sarah (33) and their daughter Bertha (1 month) were living at “The Plough Inn” East Woodhay, Hampshire.

The 1881 census records James (43), a Head Gardener, Sarah (43), Bertha (10) and Rose (6), living at Mile House Cottages, Sulhamstead, Berkshire.

In 1891 James (53), a Domestic Gardener, Sarah (53) and Rose (16), a Milliner, were recorded living at 89 Brunswick Street, Reading

In 1901 James (63), a Domestic Gardener and Sarah (63), were living at 22 Chester Street, Reading, Berkshire

Sarah died aged 72, on the 24thFebruary 1910 (abode at time of death, Windmill Road, Mortimer). Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28thFebruary.

In 1911 James (73) was living at 68 Gloucester Road, Newbury, with his married daughter Rose (Martha Rose) Kendrick (36), his son-in-law, Alfred Kendrick (49), an Outfitter’s Shop Manager and their children, Ruth (12), Phillip (11) and Grace (6).

James continued to live at 68 Gloucester Road until he died aged 83, on the 26thFebruary 1921. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with Sarah, on the 2ndMarch.
