Andrew Powers was born circa 1828 in Newbury the son of Thomas & Mary, nee Lewington, Powers.

           

In the 1841 & 1851 censuses Andrew was living with his parents Thomas & Mary and siblings in Northcroft Lane in Newbury. In the latter he was a painter & glazier.

 

He married Matilda Banbury in Q4 1853 in Newbury district. In the 1851 census Matilda was living with her sister Emma Banbury at Hardings Yard in Newbury and was recorded as a milliner and dressmaker. Matilda was born circa 1817 in Newbury.

 

In the 1861 & 1871 censuses Andrew & Matilda were living in Westcombes Buildings in Northbrook Street in Newbury. In 1861 Andrew was recorded as a painter, plumber & glazier & Matilda as a dressmaker. In 1871 Andrew was a painter & Matilda was not working.

 

Matilda died 16 October 1878 in Westcombes Buildings and was buried 19 October 1878 at Newtown Road Cemetery. A death notice appeared in the Newbury Weekly News on 17 October stating she had died suddenly at Westcombes Buildings.

 

Andrew married Harriet Mackerell in Q4 1879 in Newbury district. Harriet was born circa 1833 in Newbury daughter of Andrew & Ann. She had been employed as a servant prior to the marriage. In the 1851 census she was working as a servant at 13 Blenheim Terrace in Leeds, in 1861 in Cheshunt as a cook & in 1871 in Bartholomew Street in Newbury as a domestic servant, nurse.

 

In the 1881 census Andrew & Harriet were living in London Road in Newbury & in 1891 at 28 Marsh Street in Newbury. Andrew was recorded as a painter in both censuses.

 

Andrew & Harriet were living in Raymond’s Almshouses in Newbury in the 1901 census, neither had an occupation recorded.

 

Andrew died 15 February 1910 & was buried 19 February 1910 at Newtown Road.

 

Harriet was living by herself at 7 Princes Place, Cheap Street in Newbury in the 1911 census and was recorded as having private means.

 

Harriet died April 1915 while still living at 7 Princes Place. She was buried 13 April 1915 at Newtown Road Cemetery.
