Sarah Nailor

1822-1909

Sarah, her parents, siblings and early life:

Sarah was born on the 27^th November 1822. She was baptised on the 25^th December 1822, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Joseph (a Watchman) and Eliza Allen (nee Smith) who were married on the 28^th February 1814, at St Nicolas, Newbury (both were single, witnesses, Samuel Purdue and John Wright)

Joseph and Eliza also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas:

William, 16^th April 1815 (dad a Papermaker) (died aged 10 months, buried 21^st February 1816, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Henry, 2^nd December 1818 (dad a Papermaker)

Mary, 29^th August 1830 (dad a Labourer) (died aged 11 months (smallpox), buried 8^th July 1831, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Thomas, 16^th December 1833 (dad a Labourer)

and John born c1834

In 1815 Joseph Allen (28), a Papermaker and Eliza (22) were living in West Mills, Newbury.

The 1841 census records Joseph (50), a Male Servant, Eliza (40), a Female Servant, Sarah (15), a Female Servant and John (8), a Male Servant, living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

In 1851 Joseph (63), a Brewer’s Servant, Eliza (55), Sally (27) (Sarah) and John (17), a Brewer’s Servant, were living in Stroud Green, Greenham, Berkshire.

Sarah’s father Joseph Allen, died aged 68, in 1853, he was buried on the 22^nd April, at St Mary, Greenham

Sarah in later life:

Sarah married Henry Hazel in 1858, marriage registered in Newbury.

The 1861 and 1871 census records record Henry, an Agricultural Labourer, and Sarah living in Stroud Green. In 1871 Sarah’s widowed mother, Eliza Allen (75) was recorded living with them.

Sarah’s mother Eliza Allen died aged 79, in 1873, she was buried on the 11^th January, at St Mary, Greenham

Sarah was widowed in 1880, Henry died aged 50, he was buried on the 7^th May, at St Mary, Greenham.

The 1881 census records Sarah (59) as a Laundress, living in the Newbury Workhouse.

Sarah remarried in 1888, her 2^nd husband was John Nailer, a widower (marriage registered in Newbury)

(John Naylor was baptised on the 20^th September 1818, in Thatcham, the son of John and Mary Nailer (nee Wells) who were married on the 30^th May 1814, in Thatcham. John married Elizabeth Powell in 1841. They had 6 children. John was widowed in 1885)

Sarah was widowed again 1890, John died aged 72. He was buried on the 29^th November, at St Mark, Cold Ash.

In 1891 Sarah Nailor (64) was recorded lodging in Park Lane, Thatcham, with a widow, Sarah Gray (77).

The 1901 census records Sarah Nailor (79) as a Pauper/Retired Field Hand, in the Newbury Workhouse.

Sarah Nailor died aged 86 in 1909, in the Newbury Workhouse. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9^th December.
