Transciption: | THOMAS SMITH The Late Mr. Tom Smith By the death of Mr. Tom Smith, of 32, York-road, Newbury, which took place last week, the Primitive Methodist Church at Stroud Green loses a member and friend who for the past 50 years has held practically every office. He was a trustee for many years, was a Sunday School teacher for nearly 35 years, was a member of the band during the late Mr. S. Attewell's time, and latterly had been Chapel Treasurer. Mr. Smith led an active life, and with members of his family was largely responsible for the Stroud Green Chapel being kept open during the Great War, when most of the members were away from home, and the attendances were so small that it hardly seemed worth while carrying on the regular services. He was of a jovial disposition and was very much liked and respected by all with whom he came into contact, being always willing to help in any project. He will be very much missed by all his fellow members of the Stroud Green Chapel. The funeral took place at Newtown-road Cemetery on Saturday last, the Rev. E.G. French officiating. A service was first held in the Stroud Green Chapel. The mourners present were Mrs Smith (widow), Albert, Monty, Stan and Harold (sons); Daisy (daughter); Mrs. Bert and Mrs. A. Smith (daughters-in-law), Mrs. Swain (sister), Mrs Gardener (sister-in-law), and Mrs. Fowler. Wreaths were sent from the following: his sorrowing Widow and Children: Monty, Stan, Harold and May; Albert and Lizzie; Bert and Minnie; Daisy; Flo and family; Stan and Ethel; Mrs. Swain. Kate and Maud; Jessie and Tom; Louie and Phyllis; Friends; Mr. and Mrs. Fowler; Mr. and Mrs. Vickers; Stroud Green Primitive Methodists; Messrs. F. and A. Cockell; Mr. and Mrs. Giles; May and Mary; Two friends, George, Annie and family; Sarah and the boys; Mrs. Humphreys and Win; Mrs. Baker and family; and Mrs. Turvey and family. Many friends were at the graveside. A Memorial Service was held at Stroud Green Chapel on Sunday night, conducted by Mr.H. Meagrow and Mr. J. Holmes. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. T. Plumb, Greenham-road, Newbury. Newbury Weekly News 7 March 1929 Buried 2 March 1929 Aged 79 from 32 York-road.
