Dorothy May Watling
1909-1909
Dorothy was born in September 1909, in Newbury, the youngest child of John Edward and Sarah Ann Watling (nee Randall) who were married in 1899 (marriage registered in Henley)
Dorothy died aged 18 days old, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th September 1909.
Dorothy’s family:
Her father John Edward was born on the 3rd May 1877, in Market Drayton, Shropshire, the son of Herbert Thomas and Ellen Sillitoe Watling (nee Barnett) who were married in 1874 (marriage registered in Market Drayton)
Dorothy’s mother Sarah Ann was born on the 9th February 1879 in Newbury, the daughter of William and Sarah Randall, (nee Wise) who were married in 1866 (marriage registered in Newbury)
John and Sarah also had the following children:
John Everett born 20th June 1899 in Caversham (died 1976, death registered in Reading)
Thomas William born 15th November 1900 in Caversham (died 13th May 1963 in Oxford)
Albert Francis Victor born 28th June 1903 in Newbury (died 1970 in Newbury)
Rose Lilian born 22nd August 1905 in Newbury (died 1992 in Newbury)
Maurice Edward Charles born 5th July 1919 in Newbury (died 2002, death registered in Reading)
On the 4th February 1901 John Edward joined the Army, (Imperial Yeomanry, served in the 39th Company during the Boer War). He was discharged on the 9th August 1902 in Aldershot having been injured at Frobisher Bay, in South Africa.
The 1901 census records Sarah (22) and her sons John Everett (1) and Thomas William (4 months), living at 10 Goswell Row, Speenhamland, Berkshire. (surname recorded as Walling on ancestry).
The 1911 census records John Edward (33) as a Greengrocer’s Porter, living at 1, Corporation Cottages, Speenhamland, with Sarah Ann (32) and their children, John Everett (11), Thomas William (10), Albert Victor (7) and Rose Lilian (5).
Electoral Registers record John and Sarah living at 1 Gordon’s Place, St Mary’s Road Newbury from 1919-1924. In 1925 they were recorded living at 34 St Mary’s Road, Newbury. From 1926-1932 they were recorded living at 13 St Mary’s Road, Newbury. From 1933-1939 they were recorded living at 1 Pound Cottages, Stroud Green, Newbury.
The 1939 Register records John as a Market Gardener, living at 1, Pound Cottages, Stroud Green, Newbury, with Sarah and their son Maurice, a Plumber and Pipe Fitter.
The Electoral Register for 1946 record John and Sarah living at 99b Greenham Road, Newbury.
By 1947 they had been allocated an almshouse, 10 Lower Raymond’s Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury, where they continued to live until their deaths.
John Edward died aged 77 in 1954 (death registered in Newbury)
Sarah Ann died aged 79 on the 21st October 1958 (death registered in Newbury)
