The funeral took place on Thursday, at Newbury Cemetery, of Jeremiah Barrett, who died on the previous Monday at the age of 67. He had been employed at the Newbury Gas Works for the past forty years, first with the Gas Company, and since the acquisition of the concern by the Corporatio. "Jerry" was for many years a stoker, but for the past eight years has acted as timekeeper and storekeeper, and since he became a teetotaller some thirty years ago, had developed the idea of saving his money, and is understood had accumulated a good round sum. He was also an old member f the "Britons Pride" Lodge f Oddfellows. The mourners were his two sons, their wives and his grandchidren. The funeral was attended by Alderman B. Smith (chairman of the Gas Committee) Mr. W.R. Davey (manager) Messrs C. Freeman and W. Taylor, collectors, and some 23 employees at the Gas Works, who followed in processio to the Cemetery etc. Newbury Weekly News 12 August 1909 Not in Mrs P.
